1. This is a story of how bhagwan siva and bhagwati parvati saved their devotees of rakshasa origin and guided them on the path of dharma
2. Once upon a time, a rakshasi (demoness) named daruki performed a severe tapas for bhagwati Parvati
3. Pleased by her devotion Parvati appeared and granted her a boon a. What is your wish?
4. Coming from a family of rakshasas that tormented rishis (sages), she asked…
a. Oh divine mother allow me to protect my family
b. Allow me to save them from any curse that may befall them
5. Parvati spoke
a. So be it.
b. Be warned Daruki, no good ever comes of tormenting others.
c. You may be able to protect those who do not follow dharma for a while d. But everyone must pay their karmic due
6. Daruki, I am pleased with your selflessness
a. This forest is very dear to me. Henceforth stay here and protect this for me
7. In the course of time, Daruki married a rakshasa named Daruka. They started living happily in the forest. Very soon the forest came to be known as daruka vana in their name.
8. Together with their families, they started to torment rishis and munis nearby
9. Fed up by their torture, the locals prayed to aurva rishi who lived in the daruka vana
10. Angered by their misdeeds, rishi aurva cursed them a. I hereby curse that any rakshasa who remains in this forest post sunrise shall burn !!
11. Having restored peace in the daruka vana, aurva retired to tapas
12. Indra heard of aurva’s curse from narada, indra acted swiftly a. If I act immediately, I can restore the peace in this area permanently
13. He called for Devas
a. Devas, prepare for battle. Let’s finish off these rakshasas so that they do not habitate other forests
b. So be it
14. A battle ensued between devas and asuras. Indra lead devas to victory and asuras led by daruka and daruki fled away from battlefield
a. Run ! They are too strong

15. Daruka summoned asuras post war

c. We have been attacked by devas on our way out and lost the war with them

c. It pains me to see humans happily worship devas
17. Daruki responded
a. Oh great king ! There is an island in the midst of sea
b. We can make it our home. Since it is disconnected from the forest, aurva’s curse shall not apply there
c. Besides, many humans travel through this sea route and we can capture them
18. She had a plan to protect them too
a. I can invoke the boon I received from parvati and place you all under my protection
b. As long as we do not enter the cursed forest, even devas cannot harm us c.
19. Others quickly latched on to her idea
a. Then we shall reside on the island and attack humans traveling through the sea
20. Thus, they built a fort in the middle of the sea on an island.
21. The rakshasas tortured everyone traveling in the sea, grabbed their belongings.
22. The travelers were then thrown in jails and tortured till rakshasas felt content.
23. Long time passed thus until one day... a siva’s ardent devotee of name supriya traveled through that part of sea
24. He worshipped siva whole heartedly during dawn and dusk and would never let a day pass without chanting siva’s name
25. He was attacked by daruka and daruki along with their army
26. He was captured and thrown into jail along with his family and friends
27. Not bothered by this, supriya made a sivalinga out of the clay and worshipped it
28. Pleased by his devotion, Bhagwan Siva protected him personally in an invisible form. The guards noticed that supriya spent most of his time worshipping Siva and meditating.
a. Guard thought: I wonder if he is praying for the destruction of my master. I must let my master know
29. Guard reported to Daruka
a. O Lion among the rakshasas, supriya spends most of his day praying to bhagwan Siva
b. We suspect he is praying to destroy you.

a. I shall send you and your wicked friends to the city of yama* !
b. * those who die go to the city of yama to be judged for their merits and sins. Bhagwan siva is warning them they shall face death
40. Daruki pleaded a. Oh mother ! Pardon us. We’ll amend our ways
41. Parvati took pity on them
a. Bhagwan, please pardon them. They lost their way.
b. Bhagwan, please pardon them. They lost their way.
42. Parvati pleaded to Bhagwan Siva
a. Bhagwan, please spare them. I gave a boon to daruki that she will be able to protect her family
b. I pray you reside here. With your residence. they Shall not dare to misbehave again
43. Bhagwan Siva agreed
a. So be it Parvati.
b. supriya - Your name shall eternally be associated with this place.
c. I shall lead these rakshasas on to the path of dharma* and henceforth be known as naga* natha d. Parvati spoke: Then I shall be here as nageswari

நாகேஸ்வர்
1. பகவான் சிவபெருமானும் பகவதி பார்வதி தேவியும் தங்கள் பக்தர்களை எவ்வாறு காப்பாற்றினார்கள் என்பது பற்றிய கதை இது. அரக்கர்களைத் தர்மத்தின் பாதையில் வழிநடத்தியது.
2. ஒரு காலத்தில், தாருகி எனும் அரக்கி ஒருத்தி பார்வதி தேவியை நோக்கிக் கடுமையான தவம் செய்தாள்.
3. அவளது பக்தியால் மகிழ்ச்சி அடைந்த பார்வதி தேவி அங்கு தோன்றி அவளுக்கு ஒரு வரம் கொடுத்தார்.
a. உன்னுடைய விருப்பம் என்ன?
4. முனிவர்களைத் துன்புறுத்திய அரக்கர்களின் குடும்பத்திலிருந்து வந்தவள், அவள் கேட்டாள்…
a. ஓ என் தாயே! என் குடும்பத்தை பாதுகாக்க எனக்கு வரம் கொடுங்கள்.
b. அவர்களுக்கு ஏற்படக்கூடிய எந்த சாபத்திலிருந்தும் அவர்களைக் காப்பாற்ற எனக்கு வரம் கொடுங்கள்.
5. பார்வதி பேசினார்
a. அப்படியே ஆகட்டும்.
b. தாருகி நீ கவனமாக இரு, மற்றவர்களைத் துன்புறுத்துவதால் எந்த நன்மையும் இல்லை.
c. தர்மத்தைப் பின்பற்றாதவர்களை நீ கொஞ்ச காலம்தான் பாதுகாக்க முடியும்.
d. ஆனால் ஒவ்வொருவரும் தங்களது கர்ம விதிக்கு உடன்பட்டுத்தான் ஆக வேண்டும்.
6. தாருகி, தங்களின் பொதுநல சிந்தையால் நான் மகிழ்ச்சியடைகிறேன்.
a. இந்த காடு எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்தது. இனிமேல் இங்கேயே தங்கி எனக்காக இதைப் பாதுகாக்கவும்.
7. சிலகாலம் கழித்து, தாருகி, தாருகா எனும் அரக்கனை மணந்தாள். அவர்கள் மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் காட்டில் வாழ ஆரம்பித்தார்கள். மிக விரைவில் அந்தக் காடு தாருகா வனம் எனும் பெயரால் அழைக்கப்பட்டது.
8. அவர்கள் இருவரும் குடும்பத்தினருடன் சேர்ந்து, அருகிலுள்ள முனிவர்களைத் துன்புறுத்தத் தொடங்கினர்.
9. அவர்களின் சித்திரவதைகளுக்கு ஆளான, உள்ளூர்வாசிகள் தாருகா வனத்தில் வாழ்ந்த அவுர்வா முனிவரிடம் பிரார்த்தனை செய்தனர்.
10. அவர்களின் தவறான செயல்களால் கோபமடைந்த முனிவர் அவுர்வா அவர்களுக்குச் சாபம் கொடுத்தார்.
a. இந்த வனப்பகுதியில் வாழும் எந்த அரக்கனாக இருந்தாலும் சூரிய உதயத்திற்குப் பிறகு எரிந்துவிடுவான் என நான் சபிக்கிறேன்.
11. தாருகா வனத்தில் அமைதியை ஏற்படுத்திவிட்டு, அவுர்வா முனிவர் தவம் மேற்கொண்டார்.
12. நாரதரின் மூலம் அவுர்வாவின் சாபத்தை இந்திரன் கேள்விப்பட்டான், இந்திரன் விரைந்து செயல்பட்டான்
a. நான் உடனடியாக செயல்பட்டால், இந்த பகுதியில் அமைதியை நிரந்தரமாக மீட்டெடுக்க முடியும்.
13. அவன் தேவர்களை அழைத்தான்.
a. தேவர்களே, போருக்குத் தயாராகுங்கள். அரக்கர்களை விரைந்து அழிக்க வேண்டும். அப்பொழுதுதான் அவர்கள் மற்ற காடுகளுக்குச் சென்று வாழமாட்டார்கள்.

14. தேவர்களுக்கும் அசுரர்களுக்கும் இடையில் ஒரு போர் மூண்டது. இந்திரன் தேவர்களை வெற்றியை நோக்கி அழைத்துச் செல்கிறான், அசுரர்களை வழிநடத்திய தருகா மற்றும் தாருகி போர்க்களத்திலிருந்து தப்பி ஓடிவிட்டனர்.
a. ஓடு ! அவர்கள் மிகவும் வலிமையானவர்கள்.

15. போருக்குப் பிறகு தாருகா அரக்கர்களை அழைத்தார்.

b. நாங்கள் முனிவர் அவுர்வாவால் சபிக்கப்பட்டோம், தாருக்கா காட்டில் இருந்து அவசரமாக வெளியேற வேண்டியிருந்தது.
c. நாங்கள் வெளியே செல்லும் வழியில் தேவர்களால் தாக்கப்பட்டு போரில் தோற்கடிக்கப்பட்டோம்.
d. மனிதர்களை வதைத்து வாழ ஒரு பாதுகாப்பான புகலிடம் நமக்கு இருக்கிறதா?
16. தாருகா தொடர்ந்து பேசினார்…
a. தாருகி, நீங்கள் எங்களுக்கு ஒரு பெரிய சொத்து
b. மனிதர்களை வதைத்து வாழ எங்களுக்கு ஒரு பாதுகாப்பான புகலிடம் இருக்கிறதா?
c. மனிதர்கள் மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் தேவர்களை வணங்குவதைப் பார்க்கும்போது எனக்கு வேதனையாக இருக்கிறது.
17. தாருகி பதிலளித்தார்
a. ஓ மாபெரும் அரசரே! கடலுக்கு நடுவில் ஒரு தீவு இருக்கிறது.
b. நாம் அதை நம்முடைய வீடாக மாற்றலாம். இது காட்டில் இருந்து வெகு தூரத்தில் இருப்பதனால், அவுர்வாவின் சாபம் அங்கு பலிக்காது.
c. அதுதவிர, நிறைய மனிதர்கள் இந்த கடல் பாதை வழியாக பயணிக்கிறார்கள், அவர்களை நாம் பிடித்துக் கொள்ளலாம்.
18. அவர்களையும் பாதுகாக்க அவளுக்கு ஒரு திட்டம் இருந்தது.

19. அனைவரும் அவளுடைய யோசனையை ஏற்றுக் கொண்டனர்.
a. பிறகென்ன, நாம் அந்தத் தீவில் வசிப்போம், கடல் வழியாக பயணிக்கும் மனிதர்களை வேட்டையாடுவோம்.
20. உடனே, அவர்கள் கடலுக்கு நடுவில் உள்ள தீவில் கோட்டை ஒன்றினைக் கட்டினார்கள்.
21. அரக்கர்கள் கடல் வழியாகப் பயணித்த அனைவரையும் பிடித்துக் கொடுமை செய்து பண்டங்களைப் பரித்துக் கொண்டனர்.
22. மனிதர்கள் கொண்டுவந்த பொருட்கள் தீரும் வரை அவர்கள் சிறையில் அடைக்கப்பட்டு அரக்கர்களால் கொடுமைப் படுத்தப்பட்டனர்.
23. நீண்ட காலத்திற்குப் பிறகு ஒரு நாள், சிவ பெருமானின் தீவிர பக்தர் சுப்ரியா என்பவர் கடல் வழியாக அந்தத் தீவினைக் கடந்து பயணம் செய்தார்.
24. எப்பொழுதும் சிவனை முழு மனதுடன் வணங்கி வருபவர். சிவனின் பெயரை ஒருநாள் கூட உச்சரிக்காமல் இருந்தது இல்லை.
25. அவர் தாருகா மற்றும் தாருகியின் படையினரால் தாக்கப்பட்டார்.
26. அவர் சிறைபிடிக்கப்பட்டு அவரது குடும்பத்தினர் மற்றும் நண்பர்களுடன் சிறையில் அடைக்கப்பட்டார்.
27. இதைப்பற்றிப் பெரிதும் கவலைப்படாத சுப்ரியா, களிமண்ணிலிருந்து ஒரு சிவலிங்கத்தை உருவாக்கி அதை வணங்கினார்.
28. அவரது பக்தியால் மகிழ்ச்சி அடைந்த சிவ பெருமான், யாருக்கும் தெரியாமல் அவரைப் பாதுகாத்து வந்தார்.
சூப்ரியா சிவ பெருமானை வணங்குவதற்கும் தியானிப்பதற்கும் அதிக நேரம் செலவிட்டதை காவலர்கள் கவனித்தனர்.
a. காவலர் ஒருவர் யோசித்தார்: என் தலைவனை அழிப்பதற்காக அவர் வழிபடுகின்றாரோ என்று வியப்பாக இருக்கிறது. இதை என் தலைவனிட தெரியப்படுத்தியே ஆக வேண்டும்.
29. காவலர் தாருகாவிடம் இதனை அறிவித்தார்.
a. சிங்கம் போன்று திரியும் அரக்கர்களிடையே, சுப்ரியா தனது வாழ்நாளின் பெரும்பகுதியை சிவனை வழிபடுவத்திலேயே செலவிட்டார்.
b. அவர் உங்களை அழிக்க வேண்டி வழிபாடு செய்கிறார் என்று எங்களுக்குச் சந்தேகமாக இருக்கிறது.
30. கோபமுற்ற, தாருகா உடனடியாக சிறைச்சாலைக்கு விரைந்து வந்தான்.

33. சிவபெருமானின் தீவிர பக்தர் ஆகையால், தாருகாவின் அச்சுறுத்தல்களுக்கு சுப்ரியா பயப்படவில்லை. அவர் வழிபாட்டைத் தொடர்ந்தார்.

38. முட்டாள்களே!
a. எந்த விளைவுகளும் இல்லாமல் என் பக்தரை காயப்படுத்த முடியும் என்று நினைக்கிறீர்களா?
39. சிவபெருமான் பேசினார்.
a. நான் உங்களையும் உங்களின் தீய நண்பர்களையும் எமலோகமாகிய நரகத்திற்கு அனுப்புவேன் *!
b. * இறப்பவர்கள் தங்கள் தகுதிகளுக்கும் பாவங்களுக்கும் ஏற்ப தீர்ப்பளிக்கப்பட்டு எமலோகத்திற்குச் செல்கிறார்கள்.
சிவபெருமான் அவர்களுக்கு மரணத்தைச் சந்திக்க நேரிடும் என்று எச்சரிக்கை விடுத்தார்.
40. தாருகி கெஞ்சத் துவங்கினார்.
a. தாயே! எங்களை மன்னித்தருளுங்கள். நாங்கள் எங்கள் தவறான வழிகளிலிருந்து திருந்தி விடுகிறோம்.
41. பார்வதி அவர்கள் மீது இரக்கம் கொண்டார்.
a. பெருமானே, தயவுசெய்து அவர்களை மன்னியுங்கள். அவர்கள் வழியை இழந்தனர்.
b. பெருமானே, தயவுசெய்து அவர்களை மன்னியுங்கள். அவர்கள் வழியை இழந்தனர்.
42. பார்வதி சிவபெருமானிடம் வேண்டினார்.
a. பெருமானே, தயவுசெய்து அவர்களை விட்டுவிடுங்கள். அவரகளது குடும்பத்தைப் பாதுகாக்க தாருகிக்கு நான் ஒரு வரம் கொடுத்துள்ளேன்.
b. அவர்கள் இங்கே குடியிருப்புகளில் வசிக்க அனுமதிக்கும்படி வேண்டுகிறேன். அவர்கள் இனிமேல் மீண்டும் தவறாக நடந்து கொள்ள மாட்டார்கள்.
43. சிவபெருமான் ஒப்புக்கொண்டார்.
a. ஆக அது பார்வதியாக இருக்கட்டும்.

a. பெருமானே, தயவுசெய்து நீங்கள் இங்கு வருகை தரும் அனைவரையும் ஆசீர்வதிக்க வேண்டுகிறேன்.
b. சிவபெருமான் பேசினார்: நான் இங்கு ஒரு ஜோதிர்லிங்கமாக தோன்றி வழமையான வாழ்வை வழங்குவேன்.
